Drug Addiction in North Dakota

In North Dakota, both substance abuse and mental health issues are public health concerns. Data from 2013-2014 indicated that just over 9% of adults in North Dakota had a substance abuse disorder, and an estimated 16.1% had some form of mental illness.1

Alcohol is the most widely abused substance among adults in North Dakota. North Dakota ranks third in the United States for binge drinking rates among adults aged 18 and older.1

Substance abuse and behavioral health conditions can significantly impact not only the individuals who struggle with these issues, but their families and communities as well. They are among the top conditions causing disability and result in significant costs to health systems and employers in North Dakota. People with serious mental illness die, on average, 25 years earlier than the general population, and people with mental illness or substance use disorders die about 5 years earlier.1

Addiction by the Numbers
  • The past-month binge drinking rate among those age 12-20 in North Dakota for 2012-2013 was 22.9%, compared to a national rate of just 14.7%.4
  • In North Dakota, approximately 7.1% of people 12 or older reported having an alcohol use disorder the past year in 2014-2015. This rate is a little higher than the rest of the nation. Just over 6% of youth and adults ages 12 and older have an alcohol use disorder nationally.2
  • In 2015, 62.1% of high school students reported lifetime use of alcohol, 14.5% reported lifetime use of prescription drugs, 7.3% reported lifetime use of over-the-counter drugs, 5.7% reported lifetime use of synthetic drugs, and 3.9% reported lifetime use of cocaine.1
  • Among individuals in North Dakota enrolled in substance use treatment in 2015, more than 57% were in treatment for both drug and alcohol problems.2
How Much Does Rehab Cost?

There are a variety of payment options for substance abuse treatment in North Dakota. Many facilities accept private health insurance policies, as well as Medicare and North Dakota’s Medicaid program. If you’re insured by one of these plans, it’s a good idea to call your insurance provider to learn more about the coverage offered and which treatment centers are in your network.

If you do not have insurance, or if the program you’re interested in doesn’t accept your insurance, there are still options available. Some ND facilities offer sliding scale fees, meaning that the amount you’re charged is based on what you’re able to pay, and some offer payment plans that allow you to pay for treatment in installations rather than one lump sum.

Treatment Options

In North Dakota, there are 64 substance abuse treatment facilities for both alcohol and drug abuse. There are a range of options when it comes to substance abuse treatment, including outpatient, residential, and inpatient treatment.3

The intensity of substance abuse services available in North Dakota ranges from regular outpatient care to more intensive day treatment and long-term residential programs.3
