Innerbelt Bridge
Recovery Act Investment: In addition to ODOT’s $10 million Innerbelt Bridge Safety plan currently underway to restore full, unrestricted traffic to the 50-year-old bridge, the state will build a new five-lane westbound bridge to the north of the existing structure into downtown Cleveland. The approximately $400 million project will be funded with a combination of $200 million in stimulus funds, along with state and federal transportation dollars already dedicated to the I-90 Innerbelt Modernization Plan.
Project Description: The Interstate-90 Innerbelt Bridge carries more than 120,000 vehicles each day and is a vital economic link to Interstates 71, 77, 90, and 490. In October 2008, ODOT engineers restricted traffic on the bridge - including the elimination of truck traffic - after inspections revealed that a number of steel members on the structure were aging faster than expected. When complete, the project will increase travel efficiency and traffic capacity, reduce business costs, and create jobs by building a safer structure for this interstate. This project retains a vital link into downtown Cleveland including connections to jobs, entertainment, restaurants, sporting events, and more. The bridge is a necessary link for the movement of goods and services throughout Northeast Ohio.
