This is the Spokane Street Viaduct, not the Alaskan Way Viaduct. The Spokane Street Viaduct is also known as the West Seattle Freeway; it connects the West Seattle Bridge to I-5. And, it's a mess. It is narrower than modern safety standards require, has no shoulders, has a temporary Jersey barrier to prevent head-on collisions (which used to happen regularly), and is earthquake unsafe. The new, wider Spokane Street Viaduct is already under construction. Reply

Since they are getting all this money from the feds, they should make 99 accessible north and south when coming from I 5. Steve U - yes they have started it down below about 4 months ago. Reply

This was a bad idea when the Gov. "decreed" it- billions to reduce the capacity of this important route to 80% of what it is today. Now the Fed Govt will add more funding (it already had funded a significant part of it). How many NEW jobs here? Is this a way to make the WA state gov. look better by reducing the out of control deficit, or stimulus? Reply
