No wonder the stimulus money is not working. If you idiots would make the money available to new start up businesses then maybe you would have more riders to go to work. Give the money to current businesses to expand and hire new workers. It is really getting annoying to see the city governments getting all this money to produce nothing. At the very least force the cities to use outside contractors to do all the work. Where is accountability. Crooks Reply

If anyone is wondering why the stimulus has done didly-sqwat for raising employment then look no further than this barrel of stimulus waste. How does protecting the butts of California train riders create jobs? And why do the butts of California train riders get special privilege over say, the butts of Chicago train riders? I ride the CTA everyday, and boy would I love for the government to add more to the perilous debt level so I can have a plushy cushion for my butt. . Reply

The reasonable people realize that things need to be replaced and maintained. The problem is that it should be paid for by the fares of those who ride the BART, not all the tax payers of our great nation that don't live in your little San Fransicko - Bay area who really dont' even know what the heck BART stands for, nor do they care. It says this replaces worn-out and outdated revenue vehicle carpeting. What the heck is a revenue vehicle and why would it cost over $2,000,000 to replace the carpeting in 50 vehicles? Who comes up with these estimates? Reply

The way it's supposed to work is maintenance is part of the overall cost of running BART and that cost should be included in computing fares. Also a local company winning the bid to do the work hires local people whom will have a 'regular' job. All without any political patronage for 'Crazy' Nancy. Reply

This thing's not clear. For those of you who don't know, BART's the SF Bay Area's rapid transit system. By "CAR" they mean "TRAIN CAR" (just better that y'all know that). But still, the project's ridiculous. Why not do a cheaper overhaul with plastic like the type they have NY's subways? Less maintenance, & it can be made to resist bacteria, germs, etc. BART should spend their money on running 24 hours instead of ending at midnite: more intra-city people flow = boost for economy, culture, etc. Reply

I must be in the wrong industry. Just think if we recarpet all the cars........ what an embarrassment Reply

This is the most corrupt governement we have ever had. Obama and Pelosi are taking the tax payers for everything. When will somebody from Texas or Mississippi step up and end these 2 with a dose of their own medicine? Reply

This is complete and utter bull<<Deleted by Moderator>>. What moron besides Obama and Pelosi would think this necessary??? Read Atlas Shrugged please. Reply

This is $51,000 per car for floors and cushions! The necessity of their replacement seems almost irrelevent at this cost. Reply

Wouldn't it be easier to just have Halliburton, AT&T, or some other big donor to make seat cushions with their ads plastered all over them and make them a "free gift" with every annual transit pass holder? Reply

Who does this help? This is a joke right? Reply

Reply to Angry Tax Payer : You obviously have not been in a BART car. The seats and carpeting are vile and well past their service lives on many of them. This is a benefit to anyone who rides BART Reply

Reply to BART rider : carpet and cushions? on a mass transit vehicle? A necessary item? You guys do live in a fantasy world. You want nice fluffy cushion and flowers with that? Buy your own damn cushions if want that luxury. Angry tax payer is dead right, why should my children being paying the debt for you cushions!!!! Reply

Reply to BART rider : If you want comfort, buy your own vehicle. Don't rely on us to pay your way. Reply

Reply to BART rider : In NY and DC when we ride public transit we typically have to stand up (standing room only). And the only buses or trains with cushions on them are the ones that you pay $100 for to take 8 hour trips. Nobody commutes on mass transit in luxury or comfort. Certainly not funded by the taxpayers. Of course it is San Fran so maybe folks fannies are hurting a little more. Reply

The Objectivist  Oct-30-2009 08:36:14 AM
Reply to Happy to Pay Taxes to Fix Stuff : Yeah, but if it is a viable business then BART should have the <<Deleted by Moderator>>ing funds to pay for its own repairs, you <<Deleted by Moderator>>ing imbecile, not tax payers money. Why don't you read Atlas Shrugged and see yourself with the looter mentality you have. Bastard idiot like Obama. Reply

Reply to Happy to Pay Taxes to Fix Stuff : Yeah but why do I, a resident of ILLINOIS, have to pay for it???? And $51,000 per vehicle!? C'mon now!! Reply

Reply to Happy to Pay Taxes to Fix Stuff : You agree with graft, theft by taxes and you like these DC crooks allowing this kinda money being spent for something that can be had in an open market for about 80% less? I wouldnt want people to know I supported this kind of behavior! Reply

Reply to BART rider : How could this justify a job position for every 1.7 cars at over 50,000 dollars a car? Costs seem to outweigh the benefits. Stupid for anyone to think this is an efficient allocation of resources. Reply

Reply to Common Cents : I agree that we shouldn't have to pay for something in a totally different state. However, most pork helps only a small section of the country. I lived in San Francisco for a short while when Market St was being torn up for the tunnel forty+ years ago. And although I live in California again, I don't want to pay for BART upkeep any more than you do. And I've never been on BART. Reply

Reply to BART rider : What benefit does it have for the millions of people who don't ride BART? Why should someone in Mississippi or Iowa pay for your bus seats? Reply

Very Happy to Pay Taxes At All Times  Jun-08-2010 08:24:14 AM
Reply to The Objectivist : It's a service, not a business. And as far as Atlas Shrugged goes, I'm not a huge fan of romance novels, but I'm glad this site seems to pull a diverse crowd. I'm not sure if any of you have actually ever seen a contract to build or repair something that meets state or federal safety and durablity standards but it isn't cheap. The only thing being looted is your wallets by nouveau-objectivist scam artists. Good luck surviving you mendacious back-biters! Reply
