I-405 for CA? I think NOT!! The I-405 in Bellevue, Washington State needs it more than the voracious LA county in CA. With the stacks of freeways ten high that have not changed any of their poor driving habits in 80 years, what is another $950,000,000.00 going to do, to change any of their greedy freeway living? I vote NO. Reply

He isn't God, he can't change a heart. There is NO transparency with this man and his adminstration. If isn't clear its murky. This $950 million would be much better spent on passenger rail infrastructure, such as the underpasses that will be built as part of the CA High-Speed Rail project. We love our cars, but adding capacity to a highway only increases demand and consequently makes the highway is congested again. Competitive passenger rail service would be a smarter option as it would reduce congestion on the highways and provide a more sustainable mode of travel. Reply

Francis Breidenbach  Jul-21-2009 10:30:46 PM
Also wanted to add: Rather than spend so much money to add a lane that won't decrease congestion too much (considering most resident's inability to understand that you should not drive slow in these carpool lanes, it defeats both the purpose and my desire to not tail-gate you). Why not use the money to put a light rail from Howard Hughes to the 101??? It would alleviate more fwy traffic than any other proposal AND take cars off the road. Reply

Reply to Francis Breidenbach : Thank you for the comment. We should be spending money an alternative transportation. light rail, high-speed rail and gas powered busses instead of adding more lanes to present outdated and expensive to maintain freeways. Reply

Francis Breidenbach  Jul-21-2009 10:26:50 PM
Considering the current construction involving the widening of the section south of the 10, this is going to take FOREVER to add another lane in that stretch. Also, why is this project listed twice at 2 prices? Also, if theyre not adding a lane, and just repainting lines ... why would it cost so much? Reply

Paul Chavez  Jul-14-2009 05:25:11 PM
Just to clarify, the stimulus package contribution is $189.9 (m) million. The overall cost of the project is about $1 billion. I was just on the Sunset Blvd. overpass above the 405 today, I saw a surveying tripod out there, but no signs of construction. Project is still in the preliminary stage and isn't expected to be completed until 2013. Reply

If you wait about a couple months, no one will be left in California. Instead HOV lanes will be needed for those exiting California to solvent states. Please settle north of the Red River. Reply

Why not give the 950 million dollars to 950 welfare recipients under the stipulation that they must buy a new car from GM or Chrysler and pay cash and buy a new house and pay cash. This way there are 950 people off welfare, helping with the GM/Chrysler recovery and helping the housing market all at the same time., Reply

Reply to Bill : Re Bill: because these useless non-ambitious uneducated fools that are already taking our hard earned tax payer dollars certainly don't deserve ANY more money, help, and especially do not deserve a car. Reply

Reply to Bill : Why not give the 950 million dollars to 950 Federal workers who are 55 yrs of age and ready to retire, under the stipulation that they retire, buy a new USA made car, payoff their mortgage, thus creating 950 million new Federal Job openings, 950 million homes would be paid off-helping bank foreclosures, and people can go back to working on making a great USA made car/product. Please!!!! We have an HOV lane in Denver that no one uses. The HOV lanes will have only a couple of cars on it while the regualar lanes will be jam-packed. What a waste of money. Reply

Paul  Sep-23-2009 11:04:31 AM
Reply to Amy : Los Angeles is not Denver, you idiot. Are you even aware of the fact that L.A. has some of the worst traffic in the U.S.? This HOV lanes will get used, in fact they'll get pummeled, either by carpoolers, buses or hybrids. Reply

The idea was good, a few years ago, but our leaders seem unable (there may be other reasons too) to shift gears and accept that traffic will decline because a) we must stop Carbon Emissions, B) the original congestion projections are now invalid, 3) Even after the Recession ends, long distance commuting must end, either the cost of oil is too high or the Carbon Emissions are unacceptable. Have any of you ever been on the 405 between the 10 and 101? If you have, you would think, thank god. This is a good investment. It goes towards something tangible. It will reduce congestion which creates inefficiency. Now what they really need to do, is build a train along the 405. This is way better spending then paying off derivatives and the like which have no tangible value. Reply

Not sure what the costs include but transportation is essential for an economy to function. How many hours do people waste in traffic? Time=Money. Reply

christy b  May-29-2009 03:51:14 PM
This money would be better used if applied to the development of a public transportation system that WORKS, is expansive and accessible by many. Lets put money into long term solutions not ones that might help for the next 5 minutes. Reply

Los Angeles is so close to having its "Subway to the Sea" financed and constructed along Wilshire Blvd, which would completely revitalize the city. A billion dollars would go SO FAR to help this. Wow there is some serious corruption going on here. Instead, a lane divider for the people living in the valley coming home from work? Wow. To Johnny and Oh, its roughly a Billion dollars. Reply

Kevin jennings  May-29-2009 09:40:22 AM
Maybe we need to think how this works out. The 950 million will be spent on Steel, concrete machinery and wages. The wages will be spent on food, rent autos etc. The result is that 950 million will create 12 time the impact over the next 3 years. What we get is an HOV lane that will encourage mor epeople to Car or Van pool, and maybe just maybe we save the planet from global warming Reply

Mike  Jun-01-2009 10:39:21 PM
Reply to Kevin jennings : I think my wife has tried that logic on me before...just think of how much I saved! I reply, LOOK AT HOW MUCH YOU SPENT! More worthless investment to encourage short term behavior. If you want to save the planet, save money and encourage alternative solutions. 1 Billion spent in a tiny section of roadway is another waste of tax payer dollars. Reply

Nate  Jun-03-2009 12:49:05 PM
Reply to Kevin jennings : I live in the San Francisco bay area and I can attest that almost nobody uses the HOV lane. California recently repealed the exception to the 2 person rule for hybrids, so even fewer people use the HOV lane then previously. Spending almost a billion dollars on is unbelieveble. Better they spend it on light rail, or not in California at all. Reply

Reply to Kevin jennings : What global warming? Its called climate change now. Either way, its just a way to take from the not-so-rich and give to the government who says theyll give it to the poor. get with it!!! Reply

Reply to Kevin jennings : I work for a government base where the government will pay for your commute fee's if you use the train or carpool, the bad news is, almost every car that leaves the base has one person in it. so biuld it if you want, but they won't come. and if you haven't noticed gobel warming is a political scheme do some research yourself and stop listening to al gore Reply

Reply to OH : OH.... wouldnt 950 MILLION round to 1 Billion, not one million? This is all so confusing... Before Obamamania, most people would have thought that a Billion was a lot, now we think that thousand billion is not much. Total wealth in this country --- TOTAL WEALTH -- is about 50 trillion. we owe about 102 trillion in unfunded liabilities. Obama is adding to that like money is free. The result will be that your dollars will be close to worthless soon... Reply

Will  Jun-01-2009 03:31:40 PM
Reply to Cuong : Forget the HOV lane. People need to learn to DRIVE RIGHT. If youre not passing someone, stay in the right lane. I dont care if you have 10 lanes, all it takes is 10 self absorbed jerks to slow everyone behind them down. They need to start ticketing people who drive slow in the fast lane. Revenue that helps traffic. Genius. Reply

Old Dave  Jun-10-2009 12:21:20 PM
Reply to Will : Have you actually driven in LA? The 405 on the westside hasn`t moved in 20 years. Reply

Dave  Oct-03-2009 01:13:57 PM
Reply to Johnny : Yes! one trillion will be spent on a road, that was designed and decided on building, one year ago for much less, but since this is bailout money, there is no accountabilty for what is spent, so most of the money is going to some politician. Think about this look at who gets the money. the people of this country are nobodys to all politians. do you really think that the health care programe is for the people. not obamas plan. Reply

Gray  Nov-17-2009 08:57:10 AM
Reply to Dave : Stop the spending and lower taxes. Nothing says congress has to spend money over and above what we can pay back. Corruption within the ranks of congress is so obvious that any one can see what they are doing. It is time to vote out ALL Incumbents in 2010 or face more of this large government big brother syndrome. Stand up and be counted or sit down and take what you are given. They work for us, we do not work for them. Reply
