Please explain what 70 million dollars are being spent on. What kind of transportation is this for? I have no idea what benefit this could have as of this moment. I suppose this will just encourage some more scams. Reply

Based on all the other projects listed in great detail on this site I think it would be safe to assume that the "Advance Notice" label on this project above, which obviously describes the purchase of a bunch of unnecessary buses, will be followed by a bunch of other details, bids, contacts, and RFPs. This is just the early warning. Reply

This doesn't tell me anything. What is this about exactly?? A short description in laymen's terms would be nice. Reply

Will someone tell me what is this for ? I mean, "transit urban formula funding" ohhhh it's part of the new health and insurance bill, now I get it... PEOPLE AT THE WHITE HOUSE! just copy paste the description they used when the city applied for the funds! THANK U! Reply

it will go to that part of town where no one works, and they have no need to GO anywhere! so once again they can say in D.C. "well your public transportation has never reached its 50% capacity" so no funding for real transportation issues like the Orange Line from FIU to Downtown! or the tunnel so much needed for the port! Would I be wrong to say that recovery.org isn't very specific in its description of a lot of these tax-payer projects? Would I also be wrong in saying that giving about $70,000,000 to any Dept of Transportation is destined to be a mistake? Honestly, i'm going to make a general statement, "trimming the fat off of most of these projects would be in the tax-payers best interest--frankly, as a low income government worker w/ a family, i'm saddened that money is leaving my pocket for this..." Am I missing something here? It looks like their buying a bunch of buses. They're either very expensive buses are their buying an a bucket lot of them. If it's the latter it'll probably cause massive traffic jams. Reply

if the road being built happen to be a national system that would be awesome... but... since those taxes i pay to the state every month go towards... um... well i guess ill give someone a new road at the expense of myself and all of the people who were responsible and didnt but a boat because my house value or credit line went up... A few decades ago, I went from an upper-middle class life to 1/2 the income. I didn't want to let go of my lifestyle, so I used credit cards to keep it. I soon found myself in bankruptcy. Learning to live without credit was a struggle. After I became used to the change, I looked around at my country and thought, "my country is doing the same thing." We, the people, are the "creditors" who will be left with the bill for our government's unwillingness to change. Reply

Why is providing transportation options for it's citizens considered "leftwing" for a municipality? Should we all just jump on the invisible guiding hand of capitalism and let it lift us magically to work? Reply

Not to minimize the more civil parts of this argument, but as far as the constitutional angle goes, the Federal govt is not forcing states buy buses, the states have to ask for money to spend on their own projects. They just happen to be using federal tax money as a resource which shouldn't be a constitutional issue of any sort. On a non-confrontational front I notice they lowered the estimated jobs to 757. Reply

kt  Jun-29-2009 06:08:57 PM
Wow! divide the cost by the supposed 907 "new Jobs and thats a great income! Reply

Debbie A  Jun-19-2009 10:38:26 AM
For 907 jobs, that is $76 thousand per bus per job. The big question is: are they getting rid of old buses? Probably. How many buses are they getting rid of? Of course this isnt realistic since they do shift of 2 drivers per day. so that doubles the price of the buses. Are these buses gas or electric? OMG please tell me they are electric? If not that hurts Obamas Cap & Trade bill. Folks- no one rides those buses in Miami. Our Constitution does not allow the Feds to do this. This is a STATE issue Reply

Short term stimulus and too expensive. Get use to our economy moving sideways and prepare for inflation come 2011. Reply

It needs to be more than just buses. Should be light rail as well plus other clean transportation. Reply

Anonymous  Jun-05-2009 03:40:45 PM
regardless of how many jobs go to who and when- I am still having a hard time thinking that more buses are a bad idea. It may not be a perfect plan but it is something. Reply

anonymous2  Jul-07-2009 01:31:31 PM
Reply to Anonymous : So if the buses are working and people are driving, repairing, and maintaining them, is worthwhile? Even if the buses are completely empty and a giant money pit, it is worthwhile because it employees Americans. /sarcasm Reply

Larry  Jun-03-2009 02:36:53 PM
Just stumbled onto this site and am wondering: Do you have bus stops in place? money will be spent on new or maintaining, there are some jobs. Is there a bus manufacturer in Fla? If not, no jobs there! How many ticket sellers will be needed, bus cleaners, maintenance crews, admin people? Permanent jobs all, but how many politicians have relatives waiting? You are going to or have all ready gotten the money. Make sure that it doesnt get wasted on politians or greedy contractors! Reply

Look the government doesnt HAVE any money to be STIMULATING anything..we took out a loan to give temporary jobs for 907 people???? Its like using a credit card to make your house payment you havent moved any debt actually incurred more. Who came up with the number of jobs and everything is millions and billions ten percent allowed for administration..hmmm I sense coruption under the guise of stimulus. We gave GM billions forced the CEO out and STILL went bankrupt..see a pattern here Reply

Todd Stong  May-30-2009 10:59:57 AM

The States should not be able to use a National Welfare system to bail them out. Whom at the State level would need to take fiscal responsibility if the Feds will bail them out for every little nicity they desire? Gimme,Gimme,Gimme. Reply

Reply to ken : How do goods get from State to State and then if necessary to international markets? Ding ding you guessed it, they utilize the transportation network that stretches throughout the fifty states. If transportation patterns and roads dont work efficiently in every state, the national economy of North Dakota AND Florida and everywhere will grind to a halt. This is why federal dollars went to infrastructure projects like the national highways under Eisenhower. They are in the national interest Reply

Issac  May-21-2009 02:03:48 PM
Robert A -- why should someone in North Dakota be forced to pay for you to have nicer buses in Miami? Conversely, do you think that you should pay to fix the $1 billion budget deficit the MTA (operates the subways and buses) in New York City has because of bureaucratic mis-management? It sure is easy to support spending and "improvments" when the money is coming out of someone elses pocket! Reply

nildesperandum  May-23-2009 05:23:58 PM
Reply to Issac : Isaac--if you consult the map above, you can see that there are 264 stimulus projects currently underway in North Dakota which the nice folks of Miami and greater Florida are paying for. Isnt that great? Reply

Reply to nildesperandum : But that is the point, nildesperandum. FL takes care of FL, ND takes care of ND, MI of MI...state and local governments are meant to take care of the state and local needs. Feds are meant to take care of National Defense...has anyone read the Constitution? The purpose of HAVING state and local governments is so that bozos in DC who are apt to spend your tax dollars investigating why Chinese prostitutes drink, why Argentine gay men engage in risky behavior while drunk or stoned... Reply to Issac : Reply to Isaac ... you forgot that people in NYC and Miami are the ones who paid for the highways that went thru your state where costs to build were the same (or more maybe) while only 1% of public uses it compared to NYC and Miami. Dont forget we are all Americans and should one another in times of crisis Reply

Reply to William : William...where did that come from? DO you have some sort of clairvoiant insight into the otherwise UNSEEN "overpopulation" of the State of North Dakota? What is the Average per square mile population of North Dakota as you see it? Something around 12 folks per square mile, maybe? I dont think youll go broke any time soon, EVEN if you did have to pay for the good people of North Dakota to "POOP" more children! Reply

Robert A  Jun-28-2009 02:10:10 PM
Reply to Issac : Hey Issac I have a better question for you -- why would someone live in North Dakota? In all seriousness this is about helping our country as a whole, FL is the 4th biggest state by population while ND ranks 48th. Per capita ND is currently receiving $512,907,443/641,481 people = $799.56 per person while FL is $4,421,422,613/18,328,340 = $241.23 per person. I think many would argue that FL is BY FAR a more important state to the US economy, so please be thankful for what you are getting. Reply

Reply to A Floridian : Are we not Americans? I understand your point of taking care of your own but when this crisis hit, the problem became National which required this type of action. Using your example, ND, NY, NJ, TX, CA, IL, SD, etc. fails to meet its peoples needs with the exception being FL then how will AMERICA survive. Not by FL alone. It was a reason why the constitution was written for America and it is not to separate and dispurse its citizenary among 50 countries. Reply
